Old Masters Week

Uma semana em cheio no eixo Bond Street-St James, com todos os grandes dealers de pintura a passearem-se up-and-down, a par de muitos coleccionadores, impulsionados pela Old Masters Drawings and Paintings week. A Colnaghi tinha uma pequena exposicao excelente dedicada a Cranach, assim como tantos outros dealers. As exposicoes de desenhos revelaram algumas surpresas: Nicholas Turner numa destas identificou um fantastico desenho do Vieira Lusitano, classificado antes como Escola Espanhola. All these feats were outshone by the star lot, Jusepe de Ribera’s “Prometheus.” The histrionic representation of a man in the nude gesticulating and screaming has the instant punch that appeals to the modern age. No prolonged attention span is required to take in subtleties, of which there are none. Furious bidding sent it rocketing to £3.84 million, a record for the 17th-century artist.
