Dom Fernando’s Indo-Portuguese Contador

If you go to Sotheby’s London, the first thing you see after the doorman is this spectacular indo-portuguese cabinet. Having belonged to King Dom Fernando of Portugal, is now up for sale again (Arts of the Islamic World, 24 April 2013, GBP 200,000-300,000, lot 214), after being sold by the Hohenzollern-Sigmarigen, descendants of his daughter Dona Antonia, in 2000.

The bit of the catalogue that says that “it was most likely a special commission for the Portuguese Royal family” is somehow dubious and a purchase in Lisbon by Dom Fernando seems much more likely, as only his personal collection was divided by his children and second wife.
